Understanding Auto Insurance Adjusters
Getting paid for auto accident treatments means dealing with insurance adjusters, who are organized in two main ways: team-based or individual. Each structure has its own communication challenges and benefits.
1. Team-Based Adjusters
Claims are assigned to a team, and while one person may be the lead, anyone on the team can access the file. This can lead to generic responses, as you may not speak with the person actively working the claim.
2. Individual Adjusters
Each adjuster is assigned their own claims. This means they are highly familiar with the claim's status, but they can be very busy and hard to reach. If they are out of the office, your claim's progress can stall.
Types of Auto Insurance Plans
Understanding the different types of auto insurance is crucial for billing and reimbursement.
Liability Insurance
This covers damages when someone else is at fault. A critical warning: no reimbursement will be issued until liability has been established, which guarantees a waiting period.
MedPay / Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
These cover the insured’s own injuries, regardless of fault. Patients may be hesitant to use their MedPay or PIP because it can potentially increase their insurance premiums.
Crucial Factors for Getting Paid
- Identify Insurance Type: Determine if you're billing Liability, MedPay, or PIP. Liability means a longer wait.
- Provide a Clear Diagnosis: Include a specific diagnosis in all documentation so adjusters don't question the necessity of treatment.
- Take Detailed Notes: Document the location of injuries, pain descriptions, and a clear treatment plan (frequency and duration).
Common Pitfalls and Proactive Strategies
Practitioners often face challenges that can lead to lost revenue. Proactive measures can mitigate these risks.
- PIP Exhaustion: Always verify if the patient has PIP coverage remaining. Bill as quickly as possible, as it's often "first come, first served."
- Billing Health Insurance After PIP: If PIP is exhausted, you can often bill the patient’s health insurance, but you MUST obtain a PIP exhaustion letter from the auto adjuster to prevent denials.
- Unknowingly Becoming In-Network: You can inadvertently become in-network with an auto insurer if your practice is contracted with an affiliated health plan, leading to lower reimbursement rates.
Solution: Consider establishing a separate Tax ID and Group NPI for billing auto insurance to create a distinct entity not tied to health insurance contracts.
